Reader Review: R4-K5 by Whitewolf

Wave 9 is here, friends and neighbors! And it is one of repaints and reissues galore. But that's not necessarily a bad thing here. Am I dancing in the streets over this particular wave? Not really...but there ARE some figures that did manage to catch my eye enough to pick up.

One of those eye-catchers is R4-K5, Dark Droid of the Sith.

R4-K5 is one of the very few EU figures included in the Saga Collection (with Scorch being the only other single-packed figure coming to mind). According to what little information there is on this droid, he is basically R2-D2's replacement once Vader gets his nifty new black Eta-2 starfighter to replace the one he lost on Grievous's battleship. 'Nuff said...

What struck me most about this astromech droid wasn't necessarily the paintjob itself, but rather the direction Hasbro went with it. To be blunt, it's R2 wearing a Darth Vader costume. I suppose I was expecting more of a standard Imperial paint scheme like the one found on R5-J2 (black with bright silver and tan highlights), but R4-K5 sports a dark charcoal grey body that perfectly matches Vader's shoulder armor, shiny black panel detailing that matches Vader's helmet, a smoky silver dome and panel details that is the exact same color as Vader's belt buckle and piping on his chest/shoulder armor, and a row of red "interface" buttons with silver background that is reminescent of Vader's chest-mounted diagnostic box.

R4-K5 is a repaint of copper-domed R4-G9. The third leg cannot be removed, but retracts up inside the droid's body when you turn his dome counter-clockwise. Fortunately, the "lightpipe eye" gimmick has been thankfully replaced with a black eye...something I hope the promised 30th Anniversary R2-D2 will have, since it will also be a repaint of this figure.

R4-K5 comes with absolutely no accessories to speak of.

The nice thing about this droid is that it's paint scheme is just ambiguous enough to be either Imperial or Rebel, allowing you to mix it in with either droid pool...assuming you can get past the aforementioned "Darth R2" analogy I made earlier. For droid completists like myself, this is a must-have simply because it's never been seen before in any movie/comic/book. For others, it may be just another ho-hum repaint. Either way, it's a good solid figure with a lot of possibility.
